Stand up paddle boarding affects the special athlete population by integrating balance, strength and visual skills into a fun fringe sporting activity. These three performance areas  are essential factors for the physical gains of  injury prevention, improving joint stability, improving postural alignment, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. From a community integration standpoint, stand up paddle boarding is the perfect platform as a fringe sport to further the goal of creating awareness within the general population that people with special needs have amazing and unique abilities that are not defined by their “disability”.  From a social emotional perspective, these are children and young adults whose parents and families  may have been told that their child may never walk, talk, play, swim or hug those that love them; SUP gives them the ability to shatter stereotypes and walk on water.
